The 749-neck castle hotel Rhine-Neckar
Ruins of the medieval fortification
The castle park that belongs to the 749-neck
is about 2.6 hectares big. It came into being after the drainage of an
earlier swampy ground. A so-called Prachttor (magnificent gate) in
Renaissance style, which was built by the master Adam Wagner, stands at
the edge of the park. Even though it was integrated into the town wall
here, it did not serve as a fortification gate, but as an entrance to
A true element of the medieval
fortification is the pentagonal tower, one of the fewer example of its
kind, that is still completely preserved. With a height of 24 meters,
it's also considered as the city's landmark. It dates back to the middle
of the 15th century and was constructed in the course of the second
urban expansion. As town towers lost their strategic relevancy, it
obtained its half-timbered buildup and the polygonal roof in the early
18th century. Today, it serves as the club house of the Odenwald Forest
club. Besides the "Schmitthennerstube" (a parlor room), there is also a
local heritage museum inside.
The present Protestant city church was
built between 1610 and 1612. It was built in late Renaissance style on
the site of a chapel from the 14th century, but not much is known about
it. Jakob Muller, who was from Heilbronn, was the church architect.
The so-called Totenkirche (the
description of certain sacred buildings mainly used for funeral and
memorial purposes) had its beginnings in a parish church consecrated in
honour of John the Baptist and was mentioned for the first time in 1330.
Originally built in romantic style, it underwent an expansion and gothic
restructure in the 16th century.
Buildings worth seeig
The youngest of the three castles,
Alexanderburg, was built during the end of the 14th, beginning of the
15th century and was named after Alexander of Helmstatt. The southern
wall was part of the medieval town wall. After a variable history in the
19th and 20th century, it was converted into the present city hall in
the course of the Old Town renovation. Further historical buildings are
the former district exchange building, the former municipal court house
as well as two superb half-timbered houses, namely the Renthaus and the
tavern "Zum Lowen" ("At the Lion").
